Areas of Practice
Gary L. Conlay has a general civil
practice with an emphasis in estate planning and taxation. He provides a full range
of legal services to meet all of his clients' needs. Areas of practice include:
Estate Planning:
Mr. Conlay provides advice and services in assisting individuals and families
in the orderly and efficient disposition of their property, and in achieving their estate
planning goals while minimizing Louisiana and federal taxes. The implementation of an
estate plan may include complex or simple wills, revocable or irrevocable trusts,
living trusts, life insurance trusts, charitable trusts or other specialized trust
instruments. In addition, an estate plan may include durable general powers of attorney,
durable health care powers of attorney, or other specialized documentation. Care is
taken to explain each estate plan in plain language and simple terms.
Successions and Probate:
Whether one dies with or without a will, estate administration, the transfer
of assets and wealth and other issues must be addressed. Mr. Conlay works with families,
fiduciaries and businesses to make sure this transition is accomplished in a timely and
cost efficient manner with minimal tax consequences.
Trusts:
The use of trusts in estate planning may be appropriate and necessary in
achieving a client's goals. Mr. Conlay drafts a variety of trusts, including
revocable and irrevocable trusts, living trusts, life insurance trusts, charitable or
other specialized trusts. Trusts are drafted to specifically address the needs of each
individual client based on their unique circumstances and wishes.
Tax:
Mr. Conlay is experienced in providing advice to individuals and businesses
regarding tax planning strategies. He represents individuals and businesses in disputes
with the Internal Revenue Service, the Louisiana Department of Revenue and Taxation, and
other taxing authorities. He serves as counsel to the Natchitoches Tax Commission.
He is licensed to practice before all Louisiana and federal courts, including the United
States Tax Court, and before various administrative courts including the Louisiana Board
of Tax Appeals.
Elder Law:
Distinct and specific legal issues face older Americans. Planning for
long-term care and health issues is becoming a necessity in our society. Mr. Conlay guides
clients in planning for these situations.
Corporate and General Business Law:
Mr. Conlay can assist clients in the formation and maintenance of C
corporations, S corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies and other
specialized entities to meet a client's particular needs. He has experience in providing
businesses with advice on a complex range of issues faced in today's marketplace. Other
general commercial law services which Mr. Conlay can provide include negotiating and
preparting contracts, purchase and sales agreements, preparation of financing documents
and any other specialized documents a client's situation may require.
Real Estate Law:
Mr. Conlay is experienced in representing clients in real estate
transactions, including purchases, sales, financing, leases, foreclosures and other
special needs.
Creditors Rights:
Mr. Conlay represents financial institutions and other creditors in enforcing
secured and unsecured claims in state and federal court, including the United States
Bankruptcy Court.
Family Law:
Mr. Conlay represents clients in a full range of family law, including
adoption, prenuptial agreements, divorce, community property, child custody, child
support, matters incidental to divorce and other family law matters.
Litigation:
Mr. Conlay is licensed to practice before all Louisiana and federal courts,
and his practice routinely requires litigation of his clients' cases. He is also competent
in addressing client needs in arbitration and ultimate dispute resolution. His litigation
experience also includes having served as chairman of Medical Review Panels in many cases.
